OAGS News Summer 2020
03 September 2020
For this year’s mini tour an elite group of OA golfers gathered for a light lunch at Burnham & Berrow Golf Club in Somerset, a stunning links course with beautiful views over the Bristol Channel. Guy Green (SHO1971-73), had arranged access to the Championship course for two matches. On the first day Jack Cruickshank (B1967-70) partnered Ian Wilson-Soppitt, OAGS President, and they amassed a magnificent 38 points to win, helped in no small way by Jack playing the first 9 in level par gross off a handicap of 13!
The winners on day 2 were Adam Thrussell (B1992-97) and Paul Yule (SHE1969-74) with 28 points. The tour ended that evening with an excellent 3-course meal. Birthdays were celebrated by Dick Hall (K1969-74) and Jack Cruickshank (B1967-73), who generously provided liqueurs all round. Fine wine and good food, shared with great friends and golfers, what more could be asked of life?
OAGS members went home the next day feeling an immense sense of pleasure and achievement, with just a hint of weariness.
During the mini tour it was good to see Richard Blake (M1949-53), who attended lunch on the first day and watched the tee off. Richard reported that Iain Muir (SHE1942-46) is well, despite being a bit unsteady on his feet, he is eating well and happy in his new home. Iain had enjoyed a call with David Massey (SHE1943-47), a close friend at Aldenham.
A European Tour is being organised now by John Yule (SHE1966-71). The plans include a trip to Dinan starting on Monday 5th October with a round of golf at Hayling Island before setting off to St Malo, with dinner in the ship’s excellent restaurant. After golf in St Malo, Dinard, and Les Ormes the group will drive to Ouistreham in Normandy for dinner and then take the late night sailing to Portsmouth. This is all subject to Corona virus regulations and restrictions, but OAGS are forever optimistic. Anyone interested in joining the Tour would be very welcome and should contact Ian Eggleden (SHE1958-63).
Matt Wallace (L2003-08) continues to impress, having had an excellent result in the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village, where he tied 4th. His performance at the PGA Championship was also impressive. Keep it up, Matt!
Finally, as Captain of Stocks Golf Club Aldbury, Hertfordshire, David Gooch (K1975-80) raised a massive £2,800 by tackling an extreme golfing challenge on 12 August ’20, to raise funds for Herts Young Homeless. Starting at 6.30am, David played 4 consecutive rounds of golf - yes, 72 holes - in one day at Stock's Golf Club. The charity provides services to support vulnerable people in Hertfordshire. Great work David!
