OA Day 2019 - School House Reunion
20 June 2019
Around 150 OAs and guests returned to Aldenham on OA Day and for the School House Reunion, on Sunday 9 June ‘19. School House was the focus for the day, with current students from Leeman’s and Riding’s, formerly Evens and Odds respectively, on hand to explain what school life is like for them now. Key changes are that School House is now for day students only and Riding’s is just for girls! We were extremely lucky with the glorious weather, which enabled proceedings to go ahead as planned throughout the day, including a drinks reception in School House Garden before lunch and the John Dewes cricket match (eventually won by the John Dewes team), which was in full swing for the duration as well as a Fives tournament.Guests were first greeted in the Library by the Headmaster, Leeman’s Housemaster, Riding’s Housemistress, the President and Committee members of the OA Society. Time was taken to remember and thank two OAs in particular, Peter Shoup (SHE1950-51) and Colin Shield (SHO1945-49) who had both left gifts in their wills to Aldenham in the last year. These unrestricted financial contributions had enabled the recent refurbishment of the Library and the creation of two quiet study rooms, which have very appropriately been named after the two benefactors.A Thanksgiving service in the Chapel brought everyone together in reflection and to learn or relearn the School song, which has been resurrected in recent years – Hanc Aldenham, Hanc Aldenham! The ages of those present ranged from 17 to 97 and at lunch time a hum of chatter and laughter filled the Dining Hall, as guests remembered time spent there in years gone by. For some this was the first visit in 60 years, others are regulars at events, some with their own children now enjoying another kind of Aldenham education.
