Old Aldenhamian Football Club Report - Season 2012/13

This season has been a very positive one. On a non-footballing front, the reputation of the club has gone from strength to strength, including a very positive report from the AFA to the Arthurian League regarding our behaviour and conduct “A credit to the Arthurian League” was a quote used by the AFA CEO, Mike Brown. Referees have been very positive and the clubs relationship with the league has been strengthened further with the appointment of Patrick Harding on the league committee.

There has been a good influx of new players like Matt Hudson (M2005-10) and Ben Selwyn (L2008-10) joining, as well as players like Ben Weinberg (L2002-09), Max Raby (L2004-11), Ollie Salami (B2004-09) and Gareth Thomas (K2004-09) regularly travelling back from University to play. There have also been notable appearances from current students, Kojo Addo, Jack Jones and James Greensmith, which have given the club a very strong pool of players to choose from.

The teams have performed well on the field. The first team has had a mixed season, the highlight being a superb comeback against Old Malvernians at home last October. They have flirted with promotion for most of the season but some inconsistency in the final few games means 4th place and Division 1 for next season. The team is young though and will only get stronger.

The second team on the other hand, has only lost two league games all season and currently sit 4 points clear at the top of division 3. Old Marlburians (semi-finalists of the Arthur Dunn Cup) have 3 games in hand though and are unlikely to slip up. So Promotion is guaranteed and that was the target at the beginning of the season. A 7-0 victory against Old Harrovians was probably the best football the club, let alone the 2nd team, has played all season. A tremendous performance.

So all in all, a very good season and the future of the club looks very bright.

Martyn Berg – Chairman OAFC

The Annual Dinner on Friday 16th November was a great success. Nearly 90 people enjoyed the occasion and celebrated 10 November OA birthdays together. A drinks reception was held in The Wells Centre, which had been recently opened and current Praes showed guests around the new facilities. A pre-dinner concert, organised by John Wyatt, Director of Music provided an opportunity to see the extended music space in full use. Duncan Fraser (M1998-2005) completed the line up of Aldenham's talented musicians who performed in the concert.

Neil Sutherland, President, highlighted the broad age range of OAs present from 18 to 90. He said: "The atmosphere was the most relaxed ever and there was a real 'buzz' in the Dining Hall".

The Headmaster, James Fowler welcomed everyone back to the School and shared the most pleasing report he had been given earlier in the day, from Inspectors who had been in School all week. They had concluded that Aldenham is 'an excellent school' on all counts. More cause for celebration on the night!

Eight full tables accommodated OA Footballers, Five Players, Golfers and groups from Classes of 2003, 2005 and 1951. The excellent menu and service provided by the Brookwood team completed the evening.

A new Sixth Form Centre and major extension to the Music School was officially opened on 14th September by Mr John Wells, a former Chairman of Governors after whom the building is named. The current Chairman of Governors, Mr Stuart Lewis invited Mr Wells to unveil a plaque commemorating the occasion. Guests were then taken on tours of The Wells Centre by senior pupils before enjoying a music recital given by current students and OAs followed by a drinks reception.

On the site of the old Sixth Form Common Room and School Shop, this magnificent new building and sensitive conversion provides state of the art equipment with facilities for both recreation and study. A key feature of the new building is a green oak frame which unifies the older existing and new modern structures. A glass roof with integral solar panels sets off an upstairs foyer area. Students will benefit from new Music Technology and Psychology classrooms and the whole school and wider community will enjoy meetings in The Apthorp Room as well as concerts in the Recital Room.

Headmaster, Mr James Fowler said: “I am delighted that this major development in the School will support not only our Sixth Form students but also further enhance the considerable music facilities for our talented musicians at Aldenham".

The new Sixth Form Centre includes a careers library, which has been dedicated to John Rimer (P1956-60) by the OA Society. John was an was an active member of the OA Society and Honorary Treasurer during four decades. He was also a keen supporter of the School.
